Materials
Sharp knife
Parchment Paper
Two Cookie Sheets
Directions
- Preheat oven to 350 degrees.
- Prepare the cookie dough according to your favorite recipe.
- Now lay a sheet of parchment paper on two cookie sheets.
- The dough is should now be divided into half.
- After dividing the dough, spread each of the halves of the dough on the 2 cookie sheets.
- Cover the parchment paper with dough by spreading the dough with a wooden spoon or spatula.
- Reminder to leave a border of parchment paper around entire pan to allow for the slight spreading of dough while baking.
- The goal for spreading the dough is to aim for a thickness of 1/8 to 1/4 inch of dough.
Bake Time: this is slightly variable due to your recipes normal baking time for a cookie. Tollhouse fans know the recipe can be baked as a cookie or bar; the baking time is between those two times!
I bake for 10 minutes then begin checking – 14-15 minutes is the time which I removed the cookies from oven.
Cool.
How To Shape Heart Cookies
- The most important step is to begin with a square. For any size heart cookie, the cookie needs to be cut into squares. This is critical to making a quick and easy heart.
- Your square has been cut and it can be any size square. I suggest beginning with a square slightly larger than the finished heart to allow for the shaping. And to allow for those delicious chocolate chips which may land in an area you may want to cut. More on that to come.
- In middle of top edge of square cut a small V.
- On the bottom edge of the square, line the top of the knife directly below the V that was just cut. Make a very small cut at this area to mark the bottom of the V. This will be the bottom of the heart.
- Using the above mark, the top of the knife is at the mark, line up the knife at an angle toward the side of the square and cut off the corner of the square. See image below.
- Repeat for the other side.
- There will be very yummy cookie scraps to enjoy along the way!
- After the top of the heart and the sides of the heart have been prepped, you can now begin creating the heart by simply shaving the edges with your sharp knife.
- The top of the heart is shaved as a circle.
- Be gentle, but this is why a crisp cookie, but not too crisp! is necessary. A too soft cookie will be a problem. If your cookie dough is too crispy and begins to crack, microwave the square for 10-20 seconds to soften up the cookie square.
- After the heart cookie has been shaped, you will need to head back to your original V./ middle of the heart. More than likely the v of the heart will need to be made larger as the final step.
- I make a variety of sizes of the Heart Cookies.
Chocolate Chips And Making The Heart
Very occasionally a chocolate chip will bake right in the area you want to shave. This is why you start with a square that is slightly larger than the desired finished heart.
There is a little wiggle room with the shaving required when a chip decides to land – or even easier – add this cookie to the yummy scrap pile of leftovers to enjoy.
