How To Make The Valentine’s Day Tree With Hearts

Materials

Sturdy branches (from your yard, park, neighborhood)

Tall cylinder glass vase

Felt Heart Stickers

Invisible thread or regular thread

Directions

  1. This is the toughest part if you live in a cold weather state! Bundle up and head outside to your yard to find branches. I clipped these branches off one of the trees in the yard in the winter. Brrrrr!
  2. Any sturdy branch will work that “wanders” as in has a main branch with the little branches wandering off the main branch. Clip a few single branches also to fill in if needed.
  3. The selection may be slightly sparse as it is winter and not prime branch season, but winter is prime branch season for branches without leaves! Perfect for the Valentine’s Day Heart Tree.
  4. Clean the cylinder glass vase.
  5. Arrange the branches in the vase to your liking. Trim the branches if needed.
  6. It can be a delicate balance between the branches and the vase so that the vase does not tip over. Put a towel or paper towels on the table to cushion any unintended tipover.
  7. Cut invisible thread, ribbon or regular thread into pieces to make the heart hangers.Felt hearts attached to invisible thread for tree ornaments.
  8. Tie the thread into a loop.
  9. Attach to the back of the hearts with glue or tape.
  10. Hang on your tree!
  11. Your quirky little Valentine’s Day Heart Tree is done (unless water is added, see below!)

Other Ideas For The Ornaments

Foam Paper glued to cardboard also works great. The foam paper by itself tends to fold and not hang well; simply add a piece of scrap cardboard or cardstock to turn the foam paper heart (or any Valentine’s Day theme cut out) into a Valentine’s Day Heart Tree ornament.

If you run into a time crunch or do not live close to a dollar store there are a variety of pre cut out hearts available here to speed the assembly process.

As a winter craft and Valentine’s Day craft for kids I brought out the paper mache to make cute little paper mache hearts. Paper mache is a great activity to involve kids and helps speed those winter boredom days with alot of ooey, gooey paper mache fun.

Should I Fill The Vase With “Water” ?

Of course I would not advise water (I haven’t tried it) and I like the look of the branches through the glass vase, but I have made faux water to fill the vase for a few Valentine’s Day Heart Trees to change up the look.

Materials which work well for faux water include:

  • Pebbles
  • Pebbles painted with acrylic paint
  • Marbles
  •  M n M’s
  • Aquarium rocks

The advantage to adding faux water is the stabilization of the vase. Anything works!
