How To Make A Halloween Popsicle Stick Vase

Materials

9-11 popsicle sticks (plain or multi colored) or craft sticks

Used cans or plastic bottles

Glue or glue gun

Rubber bands optional

Directions

This is an easy as 1 – 2 -3 five minute craft for kids or adults! A tutorial with step by step images is available here.

  1. Wash and clean the recyclable bottle or can. Dry.
  2. Warm up the glue gun! or open up your glue bottle.
  3. The amount of popsicle or craft sticks needed depends upon the width of the sticks.
  4. Estimate the number of sticks needed by taking one stick and placing it on the can hopscotching over the first stick.
  5. Add one or two sticks to the total number; 9-11 popsicle sticks is the usual number needed. Less if using Jumbo craft sticks.
  6. I glue two sticks at a time.
  7. Liberally apply glue to the can with your trusty glue gun.
  8. Quickly place two sticks side by side on the can.
  9. Place two rubber bands on the can; one at the top and one at the bottom. These are to hold the sticks in place after the sticks are glued.
  10. Now this part can get a wee bit sticky…
  11. Repeat adding glue to the can (you already have two sticks glued on the popsicle stick vase). Lift up the bottom rubber band and slide one popsicle stick under and press in the desired position.
  12.  Slide the top rubber band over the popsicle stick and press.
  13. Repeat for remaining sticks.

The sticks will quickly adhere to the can or bottle with the correct amount of glue. Glue guns work well, but if making this Halloween craft with preschoolers … of course, safety first.

Designing The Halloween Popsicle Stick Vase

I like the natural wood look of popsicle sticks, but to personalize the craft for the holiday, we used Halloween multi colored popsicle and craft sticks. The wider Jumbo craft sticks work well for wider bottles.

The sticks can be bought multi colored (dollar store alert!) or can be easily painted with acrylic paint. Painting the sticks is a great activity for the littles to participate and acrylic paint dries very quick.

If you are painting the craft sticks or popsicle sticks then this becomes a 20-30 minutes craft to include drying time for the sticks and the popsicle stick vase once glued.

Now the popsicle stick vase is made- what to fill the vase with? Fresh flowers of course work well.

I did a little twist on filling the vase with flowers and used the Halloween Popcorn Ball Lollipops instead of flowers. These mini Halloween loliipops were a hit at school for an edible table decoration. I also individually wrapped the lollipops for the Octoberfest bake sale and they sold out. Kids love a lollipop !

We had so much fun making the vases that we decided to make Halloween popsicle stick decorations too!
