What is more patriotic than the iconic combo of chocolate and peanut butter? Patriotic Girl Scout Tagalongs are easy and quick red, white and blue cookies for the summer holidays.

I use the term recipe loosely which is why I love this ‘recipe’. This is a copycat recipe for the infamous Girl Scout Tagalongs also known as Peanut Butter Patties.

The ingredients are more than likely already in your pantry. There is a very quick version and an easy and quick version of the recipe.

Clear glass filled with Patriotic Peanut Butter Patties.

The very quick Tagalongs Hack  version  uses store bought cookies. The slightly more labor intensive version is for when a little more time is available.

How To Make Copycat Girl Scout Tagalongs (Hack version)

Ingredients

  • Your favorite peanut butter sandwich cookie (I used Mini Nutter Butter cookies)
  • Melting candy or chocolate (In this recipe I used Wilton’s white melting candy and chocolate melting candy)
  • Decorative sprinkles ( I am using red white and blue decorative star sprinkles for the summer season)
  • Mini pedestal cups (optional)

Easy Patriotic Peanut Butter Patties. Copycat recipe for "the" girl scout peanut butter cookie!

Preparation

  1. Line a baking sheet with parchment or wax paper.
  2. Melt your chocolate or melting candy either in a microwave or double boiler. I find the microwave works just fine for this recipe. Of course melting chocolate in the microwave can be slightly testy – use moderation and start with 30 second increments depending upon the strength of your microwave and amount of chocolate.
  3. Dip each cookie in the chocolate. Lay on parchment paper.
  4. Decorate with sprinkles. For the patriotic theme I used red white and blue sprinkles.
  5. Put tray into refrigerator to set, 10 minutes is usually sufficient.

Remove, store and enjoy! That’s it!

To add a little presentation, I used plastic mini pedestal cups I had on hand which I purchased as the dollar store.

Very portable and easy to transport to an event. If you are concerned about heat or humidity, you can easily store the cookies and/or decorative glass in the refrigerator.

The Quick and Easy Version

This version very closely mimics the original Girl Scout Peanut Butter Patties. It is slightly more labor intensive, but the flavor is wonderful.

Buttery crackers and peanut butter is used instead of a packaged peanut butter cookie. Simply make peanut butter sandwiches with the Ritz and peanut butter and make a sandwich. Be very generous with the peanut butter and dip into melted chocolate.

I use this recipe all year round and switch up the decorations or the color of the melting candy. It is very versatile to decorate for any occasion, holiday or event. I’m a big fan of the Wilton six pack Christmas sprinkles for the holiday season.

The six pack provides a nice variety of themed sprinkles, the cookies do not use that many sprinkles and it is easy to customize the cookies with the various themes.

What Are Tagalongs?

Girl Scout Tagalongs are two vanilla cookies layered with peanut butter and covered with chocolate. But wait, what are Girl Scout Peanut Butter Patties?

Girl Scout Peanut Butter Patties are two vanilla cookies layered with peanut butter and covered with chocolate. Huh?

Yes, two different names for the same Girl Scout cookie? Actually two different bakers product the cookies and it depends upon your location as to which cookie is sold. Rumor has it that Tagalongs have more peanut butter in the middle!

Either way the best part of making homemade Tagalongs is you can determine the amount of peanut butter and the brand of peanut butter in the middle! Use your favorite peanut butter and feel free to use the chunky peanut butter for a twist.
