Easy As Pie: The Classic Potato Salad Recipe

If you are a fan of the tater then potato salad is a year round staple for a side dish at lunch and dinner. This is a very easy classic potato salad recipe made with ingredients you more than likely will already have on hand.

But wait you are thinking … my family doesn’t make potato salad like that! Classic can be subjective when referring to a classic potato salad recipe as chances are your  classic recipe is the way ‘your family’ made potato salad. I liken potato salad to Thanksgiving dressing; every family has their own recipe with their own twist on ingredients.

Enjoy this Classic Potato Salad recipe two ways - each a classic!

Ingredients For Classic Potato Salad

Serves: 4-5

  • 2.5 pounds Idaho Potatoes
  • 1 cups mayonnaise
  • 1/4 small onion diced
  • 1/2 cup diced celery
  • 1/8 cup Sweet Relish (optional) for those who like a sweet version
  • 1 teaspoons salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper

 Directions:

  1. Peel and dice potatoes into one inch cubes.
  2. Bring a large pot of water to a boil, boiling potatoes for about 20 minutes or until just fork tender.
  3. In a large bowl, combine chopped potatoes, mayonnaise, onion, celery, and relish (if desired).
  4. Season with salt pepper to taste
  5. Mix well.
  6. Cover, and refrigerate for several hours or overnight.

Easy Mustard Potato Salad Recipe

As I have munched my way through quite a few varieties of potato salads through the years I am a distinct fan of the mustard potato salad. I like a smidge of a kick via the mustard but not so much mustard  to be eye watering.

Yellow mustard can easily be added to this easy potato salad recipe. But how much?

I have found that adding mustard as the last ingredient helps determine the amount. Totally personal preference as to how much mustard but I think less is more. I start by adding two regular size spoon dollops then wait and refrigerate and taste test.

Sure this method takes a little longer, but the ingredients need to meld and it is easier to add more mustard later than too much mustard in the beginning and try to correct it.

Hellmann’s Mayo or Miracle Whip?

That is a question I would not dare to answer and I leave the answer to your taste buds. I was brought up on Miracle Whip so we tend to use Miracle Whip in our recipes; however either or any mayo brand you prefer is absolutely fine in this recipe.

Enjoy one of the easiest potato salad recipes which is extremely flexible!

Add your favorite ingredients such as hard boiled eggs, diced peppers or even diced pimentos as they will all work. Red potatoes can also work in this classic potato recipe and you can leave the skins on if preferred.

I never add onions or celery because I don’t like them…but I know many people do. My mom loves both in hers. I like mine with peelings on, she does not. Potato salad is so fun because you can make it your own….I like dill pickles in mine and miracle whip instead of mayo…
