Move over Hello Kitty? Say Hello to Gudetama, the lazy egg who is making a splash, fry and sizzle in Japan and working its’ magic across the ocean as well to the U.S. Okay, I am trying to warm up to this ‘lazy egg’ and his bacon blanket. Wait, who said bacon?

Who Is The Sanrio Gudetama?

Why is Gudetama aiming to be the next Hello Kitty? Coming to a store near you!

Created by Sanrio who brought us the iconic Hello Kitty, Gudetama is a lazy egg, not necessarily in a great mood lazy egg. Translated from Japanese, gude gude means lazy egg.

The Gude was born in 2013 and while no Hello Kitty, I admit he can be an acquired taste. And technically the Gude is neither a he nor she. The Gudetama continues its’ popularity in Japan, as in very very popular.

Does Gudetama have his own Facebook page and Twitter account?

Why of course. And to date Gude’s Facebook page has over 178,000.

Gudetama is quite prolific on Twitter (may need a translator) and has over 637,000 followers to date. That is a figure a real life Twitter account would love to achieve!

The Gudetama gude gude airplane tour is a hit in Japan, take an imaginary ride on the Gudetama airplane which is decked out in everything Gudetama themed.

Will The Amercian Market Warm Up to Gudetama?

Hmm. Perhaps. At first I thought, an egg? But browsing through a selection of Gudetama merchandise on Amazon, ya know…. I am warming up to the little guy. Why? I don’t know. Something different, something unique, and who can deny the allure of a bacon blanket?

Here are a few of my favorite Gudetama items, what’s not to love?

  1. I want to make sure I understand correctly. A Gudetama means lazy egg and it is being marketed on different products?

  2. Hmm. I’m not sure if a lazy egg will catch on here outside of the Kawaii crowd. Maybe if it WAS a slice of bacon. You know how ‘Merica is with its bacon. lol

  3. Very interesting. First time I have heard of Gudetama, Hello Kitty is very popular here.
