Victoria Stilwell’s book The Secret Language Of Dogs makes a wonderful gift for the dog owner in your life. Perhaps you are a fan of Ms. Stilwell from Animal Planet or you will become a new fan after reading this informative book which delves into the why behind a dogs’ behavior. You no longer have to wonder why a dog behaves in a certain way; the why is thoroughly explained and then the how to incorporate the information into your daily life is extremely helpful and practical for a dog or owner of any age.

Can An Old Dog Learn New Information ?

Absolutely. I’ve had a dog as a faithful and loving companion my entire life and am always interested to learn new information.  I was particularly interested in the chapter entitled Lateral language which connects the brain hemispheres to dominance physical movements to training.

Did you know dogs have a dominant paw? A dominant direction of a wagging tail? A dominant nostril?

Victoria Stilwell explains the connection of how the  left and right brain hemispheres of your dog relate to behavior which in turn relates to how to train your dog.  After reading this chapter I guarantee you will now be observing your dog to determine if you have a left or right paw dominant dog and which way does your dog wag his tail more!

Training and Top Tips The Secret Language Of Dogs

One of the best features of the book are the practical and realistic Training Tips and Top Tips sprinkled throughout each chapter. If you have every encountered a ‘my way or the highway’ dog trainer yet your dog may be a ‘my way’ only type dog then you know sometimes one must use all the tools in the toolbox to teach behaviors. Dog owners will be sure to appreciate a practical approach to dog training which stems from knowing why a dog reacts in a certain way and how to translate the why into practical training suggestions.

I recommend Victoria Stilwell’s book The Secret Language Of Dogs: Unlocking the Canine Mind for a Happier Pet for both new and established dog owners. Established dog owners will learn new information to incorporate into their training and everyday life  and new dog owners will benefit from the  thorough information to enhance their dog training of a new family member.
