Ingredients

  • 1.5 cups graham cracker crumbs
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter
  • 1 cup semi sweet chocolate chips
  • 1 cup butterscotch chips
  • 1 cup chopped walnuts or pecans
  • 1 1/3 cups shredded coconut
  • 1 14 oz. can sweetened condensed milk

Instructions

  • Heat oven to 350 degrees.
  • Line a 13 X 9 baking pan with parchment paper. The entire pan should be lined.
  • Cut up butter, place in baking pan and put in oven until butter is melted.
  • Remove pan from oven and sprinkle graham cracker crumbs over the butter. With a wooden spoon lightly pat the graham cracker crumbs into the butter forming a crust for the bottom layer of the Hello Dolly Bar.
  • Alternate and recommended method: Melt butter in the microwave. Add graham crackers to butter and lightly mix. Add mixture to parchment lined pan and lightly press the mixture into a graham cracker layer.
  • Sprinkle chopped nuts over the graham cracker layer.
  • Sprinkle semi sweet chocolate chips over the graham cracker layer.
  • Sprinkle butterscotch chips over the graham cracker layer.
  • Pour condensed milk over mixture.
  • Sprinkle coconut over top of bars.
  • Cook at 350 degrees for 25 minutes. The coconut should be very lightly browned.
  • Cool.
  • Using the parchment paper as handles lift the Hello Dolly Bars out of the baking pan.
  • Cut into squares.

Notes

Tips I've Learned Through The Years !
Use parchment paper as a pan liner and as 'handles' to lift the Hello Dollies out of the pan. This saves a lot of time cleaning up as Hello Dolly Bars can stick to the pan even with a pan prepped with cooking spray.

My original family recipe used the condensed milk as the last layer. We all know that while Hello dollies aren't the prettiest of desserts, the decadent sweetness prevails for this yummy dessert. Adding the coconut as the last layer makes for a more attractive dessert. While combining the graham crackers and butter does require an extra step and bowl ... the result is worth the extra step as the crust combines easier.
